One of the best books I’ve read recently. Not your typical science fiction it follows the journey of a handful of people (priests and doctors mostly) on a journey into space for humanity’s first encounter with an alien civilization. The book explores the implications of discovering an alien culture on the religious, anthropological, linguistic, and philosophical understandings of human cultures.

The book flashes back and forth in time. The characters are some of the most compelling you will come across in literature. Particularly Emilio Sanchez. The first encounter with the aliens turns out to be deceptively peaceful but it is only later when they run into a separate species of alien that the book reaches its devastating ending.

The book won numerous awards. There is a sequel called “Children of God” that is also worth reading.

I prefer the Lord of the Rings from Tolkien but this story is delightful. And it is surprisingly funny. I’d forgotten how much humor the book has in it. It follows Bilbo Baggins as he is enlisted as a “professional burglar” on an adventure with Gandalf the Wizard and a group of dwarves who are determined to retrieve the gold that was stolen from them by Smaug, the Dragon.

The book is episodic with many different adventures along the way to the final battle with Smaug.

The Hobbit also lays the groundwork for what will become the adventures of Frodo Baggins in the Lord of the Rings so if you want to know more about the origin of the “Ring of Power” I would highly recommend this book.

  3. Title: The Plot Against America
    Author: Philip Roth
    Name: Mr. Wilhite
    Grade: Teacher
    Reading Level: College Level
    Book Genre: Fiction
    Rating: 4 Stars

Roth is one of my favorite writers working today and this is arguably his best novel. It is “historical fiction” set in an alternate world where Charles Lindberg defeats F.D.Roosevelt for the office of President and because of Lindberg’s anti-semitic beliefs allows the U.S.A. to remain isolated from the War against Nazi Germany. The story gets creepier and creepier as you see anti-semitic policies being implemented in this country in ways that parallels what really happened to Jews in Germany before and during WWII.

The main character of the novel is my favorite and has the same name as the author although you shouldn’t forget that this is actually a work of fiction. This book won lots of awards and I suspect Roth will one day win the Nobel Prize for Literature.

    Author: William Sleator
    Name: Emily Jiang
    Grade: 6th
    Rating:*****
    Genre: Sience Fiction
Anne was given a big responsibility the day Uncle Marco left her two boxes. She was to keep them apart from each other so one was put in the basement and the other was put in the depths of her tousled closet. One day, her curiosity got so intense that she went to the basement to try to open the box; she couldn't open the metal one in her closet. She carefully removed the top and a crab-like creature scuttled out and meandered to the other end of the room. She let ou a scream and bolted up the stairs. That night, she had a dream- a vision of Uncle Marco telling her to open the metal box and the directions how. The following day, she didn't know wether to open it or not,so she went down to the basement to look at the other one. There were many crab critters, now! Will opening the metal box stop them or just make it worse?
My favorite charecter is Henrey because he is supportive and helpful.

In the place once known as North America there is a country called Panem that has twelve districts. But, there used to be thirteen until the districts rebelled against the evil Capital. Twelve districts were beaten and one district was destroyed. But after that was over, every year one boy and one girl from each district were put in an arena in the capital to fight to the death on television. Katniss Everdeen of district twelve has a little sister named Primrose who is chosen to be in the games. But Katniss steps up to take her sister's place. Doing everything she can to get sponsors to send her survival items, Katniss pretends to be in love with the boy contestant from her district, Peeta, and the Capital makes a new rule. " If two contestants from the same district are the final two they may both go home." But the Capital can do much more than change the rules. They control everything in the arena, such as the weather. Katniss must face rain storms and fire balls. After weeks of hardship the games are coming to a close with Peeta and Katniss as the final two. They are waiting to be told that they won when the Capital says that the new rule has been revoked. Katniss and Peeta are both going to eat the poisoness killer berries, nightlock. But will they go through with it? Read The Hunger Games to find out. My favorite character is the contestant "Foxface" because she is very smart and makes it into the final four.

  7. Title: Tales of the Greek Heroes
    Author:Roger Lancelyn Green
    Emily Olsen
    Rating:4
    Grade: 6
    Genre: Traditional Literature

This book is about almost all the Greek heroes/ Gods to ever exsist in Greek culture. From Zues to Madusa, this book has it all. One of the things about these stories is that they are simalar to other religion beliefs such as Christian, like when God made man for exsample. Zues breathed into him and made him out of his image just like God did in the bible. I really loved how Hermes was basicly like a servant between the Gods. They treated hom like a lower class citezen, but after a while, he started to be more impotant and the Gods treated him better. If you like a good myth book or you are looking for something different. I suggest this book. It was ok but it wasn't the best book I have ever read.

    Author:Jerry Spinelli
    Name: Mrs. Rice
    Rating:4
    Genre: Young Adult Fiction

So, I've been telling my students what a great book this is for girls to read. Was I ever wrong!! Yes, it's a terrific book for girls, but it's actually written from a 16 year old boy's perspective, and it's really about his relationship with Stargirl. What I love about the book is that we all have a little bit of Leo (the main character) and a little bit of Stargirl in us. We have a need to conform and a need to spread our wings. The book made me want to do nice things for people!! Read this book. You'll think twice about the way you treat people who are "weird".

In this thrilling book, the first in the mystifying trilogy, Nancy and her friends, George and Bess become bridesmaids for their friend, Sydney, who is a top-of-the-line model, and is getting married to TV-reality show spud, Vic. But as they are extremely in love, some "accidents" are discouraging the happy couple. First, Vic is almost poisened with jet fuil at his welcoming party, and Sydney's preordered wedding dress is ruined at the shop. Sydney multiple times calls off the wedding, but Vic's soothing voice comforts her into keep it on. Nancy, fed up with Syd's unhappyness, takes on the mystery, as her newest case. She convicts one of her fellow bridesmaids, but could it be someone else!?

My favorite charactor(s) are Bess and George because they are always suppotive of Nancy Drew and try there best to help her with her new case.

    Author: Margret Peterson Haddix
    By: Olivia Williamson
    Grade:6
    Genre: Science fiction
    Rating: 5*
This book is about two 13 year olds, Jonah and Chip, who are adopted. They both live in Liston, Ohio, and suddenly they both get this letter that says “You are one of the missing”. Jonah immediately tells his sister, Katherine (who’s not adopted), about the letter. Later in the book, they find out that this plane showed up at an airport 13 years ago when it wasn’t scheduled to. The weirdest part is, there we no adults on the plane, not even a pilot, just 36 babies! Jonah and Chip also figure out that there were on that plane, and have to find out why there were 36 babies, and not one adult on the plane. This is a really good book, so go to Barnes & Noble and read it!
My favorite character is Katherine, because she sort of relates to me because of the picking on your brother thing (not that my brother is adopted).

    Author: Mary Doria Russell
    Name: Mr. Wilhite
    Grade: Teacher
    Reading Level: high school
    Book Genre: Sci Fi
    Rating: 4 Stars

Children of God is the sequel to Russell’s excellent novel, The Sparrow, and while not quite as good as its predecessor it is a worthy follow up. The book starts by introducing the reader to the (supposed) only remaining survivor of the expedition to the planet, Rakhat, where humans make their first contact with 2 different alien species. Emilio Sanchez, a Catholic priest, is that survivor and he is still dealing with the tragedy that befell him and his fellow travelers. He is in the midst of a crisis of faith and it takes him awhile to work up the courage to go back to the planet where he witnessed and experienced so much suffering. Without giving too much away, obviously he returns to Rakhat. Russell specializes in tragic, yet somehow satisfying endings in her novels.

My book is called A Kiss in Time. The author is Alex Flinn. The subject of this book is how a princess is asleep for three hundred years and her true love wakes her up. Some main events are when Jack wakes Talia up with a kiss, when Talia starts to fall in love with Jack, and when Jack climbs up a hill for three days! I think the author wrote this book so you can understand how to stick to your biggest values. I think the characters are very realistic. I found the witch Malvolia very interesting because she is evil. It is very easy to understand and follow this great book. I think everyone in the whole world should read this book!! A Kiss in Time is the best book i have ever read!!! I would recommend it because it is very realistic and detailed!

Although the book is slow to start, it's worth sticking with because the pace picks up about 3/4 the way through. Heidi It is a 12 year old girl who lives in Reno with her mentally disabled mother and Bernadette, a neighbor who basically cares for both of them. Heidi discovers a camera in the back of her mother's closet and has the film developed. To her surprise, it is filled with photos of her mother when she lived in a home for the disabled in New York. Heidi then leaves on a journey from Reno to New York to find out the truth about her mother's past as well as her own. I was a little disappointed in the fact that the book is based in Reno, but does not describe Reno in any way. I enjoyed the story over all, but found it a bit predictable.

I’m not a big fantasy fan but I thought I’d try this book on the recommendation of a friend. It reminded me how good J.R.R. Tolkien is and how bad Terry Brooks is in comparison. The book is not a complete waste of time but it seems pretty shallow and a direct attempt to copy Tolkien only instead of a “ring” the main character is on a quest for a sword. The most interesting character is Panamon Creel who unfortunately only appears in about half of the book. Avoid this book.

This is a biography about Cleopatra, a great pharaoh of Egypt back in the 304 B.C. I liked this book because of the very detailed and descriptive point of view like someone was actually there telling the story. Cleopatra was a good person she cared and she loved every one of her citizens. Sadly she committed suicide because of the pain and horrible things going on in her life. I think I personally enjoyed that Cleopatra was very interesting and complex. She rules a country that has been thriving for years. As well as developing technology to ancient extremes. She has to rule a country. Herself. She struggles, and slowly starts to fail. Killing herself was wrong, but she had her reasons. I recommended this book if you like biographies.

The story takes place in Germany during World War II. That is where we meet Liesel, a mysterious 10 year old girl, who although she cannot read- is fascinated by books and what is within them. When we meet Liesel she is on a journey to meet her new "family", once there she convinces her father to read to her the first book that she stole. I could not put this book down! I felt for Liesel when she was made fun of at school and the struggles that she faces during the height of Hitler's reign. The challenges that children face when war is at their doorstep, for example, being hungry with very limited access to food. I loved how the story was told and will not reveal the narrator because it is one of the things that makes this such an intriguing read. Liesel struggles with the friendship that she develops with a Jewish man that her family has taken in. The subject matter is depressing at times, but I was always rooting for her until the end of the book. I love historical fiction, when you know that this story did not happen but it feels so real and possible.

Have you ever wondered what happens to kids who have committed crimes serious enough that they will spend most of their lives in jail? Salzman gives a memorable depiction of some of America's youth who have made choices that they cannot change back. Salzman was somewhat "tricked" into taking on a writing teacher position at Juvenile Hall in Los Angeles. His students were mostly gang members who had committed a 187 (murder). We are introduced to kids from all different walks of life who ultimately ended up in a gang for whatever reason. Through Salzman's eyes we see all of the potential in these young men who are for the most part still adolescents. It is heartbreaking to read their writings when they come to terms with what led them to a gang life and what that life has left them with. I felt sympathy for these boys, but could not help but wonder about their victims and families. It is a tragic reality in which there are no winners. As I was reading, I wondered where these boys were now? Salzman's class provided them the opportunity to experience some form of freedom, which almost felt cruel because for many they were well on their way to a life term in prison. Salzman managed to make me feel sorry for these criminals and half formed young men who gave away their chance at a real life before realizing the consequences of their actions.

This book takes place at the end of World War II in Holland. At the beginning of the novel a man who has collaborated with the NAZIs is murdered in front of a house next door to the house of the main character (Anton) and his family. The neighbors move the body in front of Anton’s house. The Nazis show up and assume that Anton’s family is involved in the murder and before you know it Anton is taken away, his brother is chased by the Nazis and his parents disappear. That’s just the first chapter.

The rest of the novel follows Anton throughout his life as a young, middle-aged, and old man, as he pieces together what happened to his family and why. It’s like a murder mystery that takes place over decades and leads up to one of the most shattering ending I’ve ever encountered in literature. Highly recommended!

Dogs have been a man's best friend for VERY long period of time. Normally people don't know that their dogs are one not-so friendly animal: the wolf. All dogs, from snow dogs to chihuahuas, are the descendants of wolves. Wolves were first bred to be loving, tamed, companions and hunting dogs. They are social animals, which is why are dogs are so gentle. Many of the world's dogs are feral, which means they are wild and untamed. Although scientists are not sure about when the domestication started, dogs that symbolize the Great Dane were often shown in Egyptian murals and books. If this hypothesis is correct, that means that wolves have been bred and domesticated before 10,000 BC!

Clay Jensen's life was normal, until he found a package on his doorstep. The package contained tapes from Hannah Baker. Hannah had commited suicide. As Clay listens to the tapes, he finds out why Hannah decided to end her life. And Clay is one of the reasons.
A map also came with the tapes. The map shows certain places that showed significance in Hannah's death.
Clay was not the only one that recieved the tapes. Twelve other people also found a package on their doorstep. "13 Reasons Why" is a really good book, but its also depressing. I really connected with all the characters. I would recommend this book to anyone.

If the rating for this was until 10....I'd definitely give this book a 10.5. This book is really great I'm glad I read it.
It's about a "perfect" 16 year old guy named Kyle Kingsbury. He is transformed into a beast by a witch in his class. Kyle becomes a beast because of what he has done to the witch and the people around him. While he's a beast, Kyle gets moved from his father's house in Manhattan to his own "castle" in Brooklyn. There he lives without a father ever seeing, but talks, to him. Kyle isn't alone though...he now lives his maid Magda and Will, his blind teacher. Over time, Kyle starts changing his attitude. Meaning he's a lot nicer, he sees more of the world, plants roses for his greenhouse, and cares for others even though he's like a prisoner in his own home! After living there for a long time, Adrian, (a.k.a Kyle) saw and caught someone break into his home. In a result for that, the trespasser was either going to be thrown out a window from the 5th floor, or be released but don't say anything or else he would show the police evidence that the trespasser broke in.
Instead, the trespasser, offered to save his life for his daughter to stay with Adrian like a prisoner. That’s how he met Lindy. When she first moves in, she doesn’t say much and hate Adrian for what he’s doing to her. Over time Lindy gets over it because of how nicely Adrian, Magda, and Will’s treating her. She starts learning with them, eating with them, talking to them, etc. A year has already passed and during the time, Adrian and Lindy start falling for each other. Adrian loved her so much that when she wanted to see her father, he let her go back to him. But you’ll have to read the book to find out about the ending. =]

This book is about a girl named Lucy and an old family curse. The curse won’t be broken unless she performs 3 impossible tasks without any help from anyone. The curse ensures that Lucy will have a baby girl before age 18, and then after that she will go insane. Lucy’s birth mother, Miranda, is insane and if Lucy doesn’t perform the tasks which are stated in the song, Scarborough Fair, she will go insane and then her daughter will and so on, just like what happened to the many generations before her. The tasks that Lucy must perform include: making a magical shirt without a needle or any seems; to find an acre of land between the salt water and the sea strand, whatever that means; and then to plow that land with a goats horn and then sow it with just one grain of corn. If Lucy doesn’t manage to complete the tasks then her daughter will be cursed too.

If I had to give this book a rating from one to five, I would give it four and a half, I liked it a lot.
In this book Harry Potter had to find and destroy Voldemorts remaining horcruxes, there was a ring, cup, necklace, crown, and voldemorts pet snake. In the beginning Harry had to find the sword of Gryffindor, that was the only thing that they new could destroy the horcruxes, the crown destroyed itself in a fire. During the story, Voldemort was trying to find the elder wand, he thought that with that wand he could kill Harry, because there was a connection between their old wands that wouldn’t let him kill him. When Harry was a baby Voldemort tried to kill him, but the spell came back and almost killed him. In the fourth book Voldemort used Harry’s blood to come back to life, there was a connection that they didn’t know about that was protecting Harry from Voldemort. Later in the book Harry learned that to have a wand work for you the best that it can, you have to be its master. In the end Harry was the real master of the elder wand, Voldemorts spell bounced off Harry and Voldemort ended up killing himself.
I think that if I had to pick a favorite character I would pick Ron, I like him the best because he made jokes and seemed the toughest.

My book is Maximum Ride Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports. The author is James Patterson. The subject of the book is about a girl/bird hybrid that was made in a factory. A few main events are when Max finds out that Jeb is her dad, Dr. Martinez is her mom, and Ella and Ari are her half brother and sister, when Max and Fang split up into different groups, and when Max has to save the world again. I think the author wrote this book so you know that anything is possible! The characters are very realistic. I found the Flyboys interesting because they are like robots and are redesigned to look like Erasers. It is easy to follow. I think everyone should read this book because it is like you want to be apart of the journey too!

Second time reading this series because I love it! This book is about three children named Violet, Klaus, and Sunny. They have become orphans because their parents have died by a huge fire that destroyed their entire house! When recieving this news, the children were out on Briny Beach for the day until Mr.Poe came and told them what has happened. Kindly, Mr.Poe took them in for a while just until he has found a gaurdian for them to stay in. Once Mr.Poe has, its an "uncle" the kids don't know about named Count Olaf. He told them that he was an actor as well as a count. Ariving there, they meet a nice lady named Justice Strauss who they thought was married to Count Olaf. Turns out, she was a neighbor. Right next door to that beautiful house they thought they were going to live in was a big, dirty looking, messy house; the place where the Count lived in and now the childrens home too. So ever since the orphans have lived there, COunt Olaf has treated them like tehey were slaves instead of children; by giving them a whole list of chores to do that would take hours! Not all was that bad for the orphans though, they had some fortunate things thanks to Justice Strauss.=] She helped them in what they needed, she let them use her library, etc. But it was just that, the rest was all misfortunes.
From the beginning, Count Olaf had known about the Baudelaire fortune and tried all he can to get it. He couldn't though, because on their first day there, he asked the children "to help make the house cleaner by using some of the fortune." When Mr.Poe heard that, he said, right then and there, that the fortune was not to be used until Violet comes of age.(Violet is the oldest, then Klaus, then Sunny). Later on in the book, Olaf hatches a plan to marry Violet to get the money. How does she get married at theat age may you ask? Well, it supposeably was a "play" that was made but used a real judge(meaning Justice Strauss-she didn't know at all!) and a marriage cerftificate. If Violet didnt go through with it, poor little Sunny was going to be dropped hundreds of feet from the top of the tower!

That's all I am going to say read the book, and the series, to find out about the ending. =] I would definately recommend this book to many people.

This is a great book if you want to read about a regular, but maybe not normal, kid. It seems like so many books these days focus on kids with super powers. And really, how many of us have super powers?

In this novel wel meet Gary W. Boone, a seventh grader obsessed with jokes. He's maybe a little OCD when it comes to jokes and his dad makes a bet with him to not tell jokes at all. Unfortunately it's during the same time Gary is getting ready for the school talent show.

Gary is like a lot of kids. He struggles with who he should be friends with, whether he should play sports with the popular boys and living with parents that just don't understand him.

If you like reading about real kids, you will probably enjoy reading about Gary and how he learns to make a bad situation, well, funny.

This is the fourth book in the Pretties Trilogy. Okay, you might be asking yourself how a trilogy could have four books, but when Scott Westerfield's fans wrote him begging for more after reading Pretties, Uglies and Extras (all great books by the way).

Scott Westerfield is so imaginative and this book takes place in a future version of a Japanese city. (The previous three books were set in a future North America.) He is amazing at envisioning how the Japanese culture might change under certain circumstances.

Aya is fifteen and can't get surged (surgery to alter your appearance) until she's sixteen because her parents are too old fashioned. In her culture you earn credits based on your popularity. Everyone has face rank calculated by how often people in your city mention your name or watches your feed (think Twitter, Facebook, etc.). Aya's face rank is low, too low.

Aya is plotting to break a story that will jump her face rank. But in the process learns the true consequences of a high face rank and changes society as remarkably as Tally Youngblood did in the first three books.

Great writer. If you love sci fi, social commentary, great characters, action, a fast plot or all of the above, read this series.

    Author: William Shakespeare

    Reading Level: College Level
    Book Genre: Play
    Rating: 5 Stars

Okay, it may be a few years before you read Shakespeare but know that Hamlet is a great place to start along with Romeo and Juliet. The school library has an edition with notes at the bottom of each page to explain the vocabulary and phrases that meant a lot back then but don't mean the same things now. Can you imagine that 400 years from now saying "cool" might mean something other than "that's great for you" or "cold".

Hamlet is the son of a dead king. His mother married his uncle (his father's brother) too soon after the funeral and Hamlet's really upset. On top of it all, his father's ghost comes back to ask Hamlet to get revenge for being killed by his brother (now his step father!). Naturally, this makes Hamlet a little crazy and sadly, makes the girl he loves crazy too.

In typical Shakespearian style, Hamlet gets his revenge but pretty much everyone dies in the process.

To understand Shakespeare I personally recommend reading as many versions as possible (meaning adapatations, I'm blogging a version by John Marsden that's great), reading Cliff Notes, and watching as many movie versions as possible including the Simpsons!

You might wonder after reading a little Shakespeare why in the world he's still so popular after all these years. I actually think it's because Shakespeare was not only a great writer but he also really understood human beings. He understands how people think and why people do such strange things. Shakespeare makes such incredible comments in his plays about life. From this play, the most famous observation is Hamlet's statement: To be or not to be, that is the question.

Read this play to find out if there's an answer.

    Author: John Marsden
    Name: Caryn Neidhold
    Grade: Life
    Reading Level: College Level
    Book Genre: Fiction
    Rating: 5 Stars

Remember this book for high school. If you are assigned to read Hamlet by Shakespeare you should also read this adaptation by John Marsden.

Shakespeare is considered a brilliant writer but plays can't always let you inside a person's head. John Marsden does an incredible job bringing the reader into Hamlet's mind and experiencing Hamlet's journey into what feels like mental illness.

Hamlet is a teen in this book and has a lot to deal with. His father, the king, is dead. His mother married his uncle way too soon after the funeral and now his father's ghost comes back to ask for revenge. The ghost tells Hamlet that he, the king, was murdered by his own brother. Isn't that Hamlet's new step-father?

Ophelia gets more attention in this book than in Shakespeare's Hamlet. She is obsessed with Hamlet but events and castle protocol keep them apart. Her father's death pushes her over the edge.

Just like parents making you eat yucky vegetables because they're good for you, high school English teachers will make you read "boring" books because they're good for you too. If Hamlet is part of your high school reading list, be sure to read John Marsden's Hamlet to make "boring" into interesting.

I should have loved this book.

Cassie is a teen violin prodigy until her father smashes her violin. Cassie runs away to see her grandfather -- the same grandfather who gave her the violin -- the same grandfather her father will have nothing to do with and Cassie doesn't know why.

Cassie's journey is not just to her grandfather's house, it's a journey in understanding and healing.

You might be wondering why as a violinist, violin teacher, fairly obsessed reader and musician I didn't like this book. . . It's the writing style. Maybe it feels like the writer was working too hard to sound like a teen or maybe that she didn't work hard enough. Also, this book is in first person, present tense and I can't tell if that's what bothered me. Hopefully it won't bother you.

Recently I read the second book in the Ink series, Inkspell. It was written by Cornelia Funke. I know what you're thinking, that this book is just a stupid book about fairies and whatnot it's really not. It is about a girl who's father can read characters out of books into his own world. Once he read his wife into the book on accident when he read out a character named Dustfinger. This was before he knew of his powers. That was the first book. In the second one the girl I earlier mentioned, Meggie, reads herself into the story and the books about how her family follows her and the dad gets wounded which makes the whole story about how they have to save him and protect eveyone. This book has soooooo many good twists and turns in it. That wasn't the most complimenting summary but this is truly one of my favorite books. Please read it!

I have always loved these books and when i found out that they had one for teenagers i couldn't wait to get it! There are 9 chapters; relationships, friendship, the power of love, family, lessons, tough stuff, overcoming obstacles, self-discovery, and growing up. My favorite chapter is friendship because thats the one that is the most personal to me but I really liked all of the other chapters too. If you read some of these storys you realize that your troublems aren't nearly as bad. Hope that you love these books and this one especially this one, as much as I do!

The story was slow to unfold and I felt like I was back in high school, but as Ronnie finds meaning in the events that happen over the summer, she comes to understand what love really means. A coming-of-age and wisdom tale.

Eragon is an all-aroud good book. The story is just one of those that you keep thinking about after you are done reading. But, there are a few places in the book that I got really bored in, and I actually put the book down for a good period of time. Eragon is about a boy called Eragon, and it's his journey through his country to help save it. He finds this egg in a forest, and it eventually hatches and makes a mark on his hand. That starts his whole journey with a dragon-less dragon rider, then a yound man, then an elf that has been poisones. They go to that Varden, and have the battle of a lifetime. So ends a good book!

Thyme is convinced she has ADHD and needs medication for it. She pesters her parents about going to a psychiatrist, but they know there's nothing wrong with her. So, when she is told that a friend of hers had been misdiagnosed with ADD, leaving him a full bottle of Ritalin, Thyme takes it from his room.

Eventually, Thyme becomes addicted and needs to find ways to get more Ritalin. She developes a complex trading system with other students at her school, and before she knows it, she is labeled a dealer. My book is Max A Maximum Ride Novel. The author is James Patterson. The subject of this book is about how Max has to save her mom and be a hero. A few main events are when Max's mom goes missing in Hawaii, when the flock was being attacked by an octopus, when Max finally grows her gills, and when Fang and Max get in a "special relationship." I think the author wrote this book so you know what it is like to be a hero. I think the characters are very real. I found the underwater gills that Max and Angel have interesting because they can swallow water and it goes out their gills! It is easy to follow. I think everyone should read this series because it is fast-paced, enjoyable, and exhilerating!!! Best series I've ever read!!

Many wolves died in the process and the same amount were born to take their place. The species was struggling to recreate, but it finally worked and the wolf-coyote muts were released into their natural habitats and the species grew in size. Today, the species is still endangered, but scientists are watching over them and learning of their actions. The wolf grows stronger every day, and soon enough they won't be endangered!!!

Heidi's mother only knows 23 words, but the word that really stands out and the one that her mother says a lot is the word "soof" that drives Heidi all the way across the country to determine the meaning of this particular word, that can possibly reveal her past. How to fix them and what not to do. Chad has traveled all around the world talking to girls our age. He also gives a boys point of view to the girls reading. He also has talked to girls who struggle being themselves. Since he is a guy he knows how they feel and how they think. Which is way different from the way a girl thinks. He gives you examples that could really happen to you in life. I love this book so much. I now have a fresh start with boys. I recommend this book to girls, guys can read it to but that would be really weird. If you have a friend that doesn't read the blogs and you have the book, let her borrow it. She is starting a new school year with a completely wrong attitude, the wrong clothes, and not one friend. Melinda has no friends starting high school because she called the cops at her end of the year Middle School party, and a bunch of people got arrested and now despise her for that. All throughout the book Melinda is trying to talk to her old best friend and she tries to make other new friends but just can't seem to find any that she could keep. I would highly recommend this book to others especially girls.

Fever is about a girl that is an only child and her mom and grandfather own a coffee shop. The story takes place in Philadelphia in the year 1793. Mattie Cook is just a small town girl that can't really talk to anyone because she is at home doing chores or either helping her mom and granfather at the coffee shop. One day, their servant that helped out at the shop didn't show up, and she usually shows up everyday on time. Mattie's mom goes to Emily's house and talks to her family. They say that she has died from yellow fever. Yellow Fever killed only a couple people at the start, then it hit Philadelphia hard. Tons of people were dying every day by yellow fever. They started taking the people that were healthy out of town to keep them from getting sick. However if you had any touch of the sickness on you if you were on the wagon going out of town they would just throw you out on the street in the blazing hot sun just letting you lay on the ground until you die. I think this book is the strongest out of Laurie Halse Anderson's books. I highly recommend this to anyone wanting to read about a dangerous epidemic that happened many years ago.

  130. Title: The Glass Castle (A Memoir)
    Author: Jeannette Walls
    Name: Miss Kaller
    Teacher
    Rating: 5

The book begins in the present with Jeannette recognizing her mother on the streets of New York- she is homeless. Jeannette tries to understand the choices that her parents made in raising her and her siblings. In order to do this, Jeannette takes the reader all the way back to her first memories to explain how this came to be; living in a trailer in Nevada when she was three. Jeannette's family moved around a lot, Battle Mountain, Phoenix, and a small town in Virginia figure prominently in her story. Eventually, she takes charge of her destiny and moves to New York. Jeannette faced many challenges and situations that on the surface, may seem depressing, but the tone of the book kept me from feeling bad for her. Rather, I envied her ability to adapt to many circumstances and persevere in spite of the craziness that she was often engulfed in.

This book definately caught my attention. It's about a homiside detective who is supposedly a medium for the Florida police department. The setting is supposed to be a place where a lot of unexpected murders have been ocurring. But each crime has something in common, all the victims are women who wre walking alone at night. The medium has a dream of being stuck in the same building as the killer. It's not long before one of the sherrif's wives is kidnapped by the suspect sending the police on an expedition searching for a killer who has been spotted all over the country. This book is full of suspense and is recommended to anyone who likes murder mysteries and a little extra chill up your spine.

  132. Title: Things the Grandchildren Should Know
    Author: Mark Oliver Everett
    Name: Mr. Wilhite
    Reading Level: HS
    Book Genre: Memoir
    Rating: 4

This author is one of my favorite musical artists (the band, Eels) and this memoir traces his life from childhood to alternative music success. The most interesting thing about the book is how straightforward it is as he discusses his rather tragic upbringing. His father (a famous physicist) died when Everett was a boy, his mother died of cancer, and his sister committed suicide, leaving him as the sole survivor of his family. He has every right to be depressed but he also has the ability to lace his story with great humor and wit. The book starts out a little weak but the narrative grows stronger and hooks you. Anyone interested in the ins and outs of the music industry will find this compelling reading.

Author: Annette Dumbach and Jud Newborn
    Name: Mr. Wilhite
    Grade: Teacher
    Reading Level: College
    Book Genre: History
    Rating: 5 Stars

This book was partially the basis for a film made a few years ago and I finally got around to reading it. Sophie Scholl is one of the great heroes of the 20th Century. She was a German college student living in Munich during World War II. When she, her brother Hans, and several other students refused to go along with the policies of the Nazi regime and actively started to protest, they were caught, put on trial, and executed by being beheaded. Reading this historical account of her history, capture, interrogation, and death makes you realize how few people have the kind of courage she displayed during one of the darkest times in recent human history. The White Rose of the title refers to the secret society of protesters that she helped lead in protest against Hitler.

  134. Title: The Clown
    Author: Heinrich Boll
    Name: Addison Wilhite
    Reading Level: HS
    Book Genre: Fiction
    Rating: 5 stars

Set just after WWII in Germany this novel explores the career and downfall of the character Hans Schnier, a professional clown who makes his living performing around the country in clubs. Schnier's problem is he can't help himself from being brutally honest with every person in his life. Even though his honesty is (almost) completely truthful that is no way to maintain healthy relationships with his friends, family, agent, and most importantly, the love of his life, Marie. People don't like to be told the truth and by the end of the book Hans is left alone and penniless. The novel asks the question whether or not you can be an authentic and honest human being and still live in this world. I love this book!
